Day 48 - King of Devil's Island (Norwegian)

King of Devil's Island.jpg

"At the Bastøy prison for youths, the newest arrival, Erling "C19," becomes fast friends with Olav ("C1"). Under the rule of Håkon, Erling comes to terms with the harsh winter, the mistreatment by the staff, and the hated Housefather Bråthen. "

A very interesting movie based on real life events which is partly slow but messed up all the time. The director did an alright job but felt like he didn't capture enough emotion needed to tell an amazing story. The ending was predictable which left me upset as I was expecting something more. The film has many slow spots and doesn't really pick up until close to the very end of the film. If you like dramatic movies then this is the movie for you.

Day 47 continued - Bernie (American)

Bernie film poster.jpg

"In small-town Carthage, Texas, local assistant mortician Bernie Tiede, a beloved member of the community, becomes the only friend of the wealthy, recently widowed Marjorie Nugent, who is widely considered cold and unpleasant by the other townsfolk. Tiede, in his late 30s, and the elderly Nugent quickly become inseparable, frequently traveling and lunching together, though Tiede's social life becomes hindered by Nugent's constant and sometimes abusive need for his attention."

First off I have to say that Jack Black impressed me with his acting abilities he was actually quite good in this film. I like Richard Linklater's approach to making this film as even during the slow parts it wasn't boring. I have mixed feelings about what the director tried to do with this movie but it was still a good film despite that. Shirley MacLaine and Matthew McConaughey did an alright job but its Jack Black who shines in this film. I have to praise the pace of the film and its point on trying to stay as close to the original story as possible. Its up to you on how you see this movie and Richard Linklater's motive for making this film.

Day 47 - 100 Days (Taiwanese)

100 Days 2013 film poster.png

"The main character is career-obsessed Bo Dan Wu (played by Johnny Lu), a rising star at a telecom company in Taipei. When he learns the news of his estranged mother’s death, he reluctantly returns to his hometown (set in Matsu’s picturesque Qinbi Village to pay his respects. When he arrives, he learns of a tradition which requires him to either marry within 100 days or wait for three years."

I wasn't expecting to fall in love with this movie but I did badly. Its a rough around a few edges but its still enjoyable. I loved the story and all of the characters present in the film. Though I wish there was a bit more drama with Bo Dan's feelings towards his mother and step-father. I did happen to enjoy the connection between Bo Dan and Xiao Wei. The two actors did a great job and I was rooting for them from the first moment I saw the connection the two had. There were some beautiful shots especially at the wedding that really impressed me. There are some holes in the plot since you never see the female boat driver again which is kind of important. Besides that this is a great romantic comedy that will bring a smile to your face.

Day 46 continued - Alan Partridge (British)

Alan Partridge - Alpha Papa poster.jpg

"Norwich radio station North Norfolk Digital is bought out by a multinational conglomerate, with staff members facing redundancies. DJ Alan Partridge is not concerned, but DJ Pat Farrell (Colm Meaney) convinces Alan to gatecrash a board meeting to persuade the new owners not to fire Pat. When Alan discovers that either he or Pat must go, he writes "JUST SACK PAT" on the whiteboard."-wiki

Not as bad as I thought because the message behind the film was good. Its not that funny but its still a good watch. There's not much to talk about because I wish is was longer and better directed plus less predictable. I have to say though Steve Coogan does a great job entertaining the movie watcher.

Day 46 - All This Mayhem (Australian)

All This Mayhem (2014) Poster

"All This Mayhem is a searing account of what happens when raw talent and extreme personalities collide. In this unflinching, never-before-seen account of drugs and the dark side of professional skateboarding, brothers Tas and Ben Pappas' intense bond and charisma take them from the pinnacle of their sport into a spiraling world of self-destruction." IMdb

A stellar look into the world of skateboarding, its like no other skating documentary. Tas Pappas was the number 1 skateboarder in the whole world while his younger brother Ben was the 2nd best in the world. This was a very interesting watch at times it excited and other times it was a bit depressing. I love the fact they used actual footage for the whole documentary and even used the home videos that a Pappas friend recorded. This is a great documentary on how you should do what you love and not fall to the pressure it can bring. It is quite sad but very touchy at the same time I suggest this documentary to everyone. I think the most important thing to take away from this documentary is to learn from their mistakes.

Day 45 continued - Are you here? (American)

Are You Here (2013) Poster

"Two childhood best friends embark on a road trip back to their hometown after one of them learns he has inherited a large sum of money from his recently deceased estranged father." Idmb

What a waste of a movie even with the talent of Owen Wilson, Zack G and Amy Poehler. The movie doesn't have any funny parts nor any really dramatic parts. The plot was over the place, I don't think the director knew what he was doing or what he wanted for that matter. There are many holes for instance after a while you stop seeing Poehler's side and it completely focuses on Zack G and Owen Wilson's characters even though from the beginning it showed you the three characters perspective. The best moment of the film is when Zack G shaves his bread, its the first time I saw him without it and it was kind of funny to see. Beware this movie has un-necessary nudity in a few scenes but greatly enjoyed in two scenes. I suggest you skip this movie or at least fast forward through most of the boring parts.

Day 45 - Neck (Japanese)

Neck-p1.jpg

"
Tomokazu Shudo (Junpei Mizobata) has his first ever crush on Sugina Mayama (Saki Aibu), a senior graduate student. Tomokazu has troubles confessing his feelings to the popular student, but one day, Tomokazu is invited to the research lab where Sugina Mayama works. Tomkazu hopes to use this meeting to express his true feelings for her. To Tomokazu's surprise, when he arrives he first sees a big wooden box in the middle of the lab and the lab is dark. Sugina tells Tomokazu that he looks scared and then proceeds to push Tomokazu into the box!
While being placed into the box Tomokazu is told that he will watch a horror movie produced from his mind, with only his neck & head protruding from the box. Tomokazu will be the first test subject for Sugina's "The Neck Machine". The device hopes to turn people into monsters from the neck down while watching monsters. The first experiment fails, but Sugina then gets the help of childhood friend Takashi Gori (Yuta Hiraoka), who is now a horror writer named Mataro Echizen" -Asian Wiki

Seriously I thought it was going to be a good movie but I was wrong. The comedy was over the top and leaves you rolling your eyes rather than laughing. There is some romantic factor but they don't really play out. I thought Chiaki Kuriyama's performance was weak, her character was a bit lacking since she was in love with a character from Gori's book rather than Gori which it hints to a bit. Or the fact that Sugina seems to be romantically inclined to Takashi until the later half of the film. If you are looking for a good romantic comedy then this isn't the film for you.

Day 44 continued - Frankenstein's Army (Dutch/American/Czech)

Frankenstein's Army DVD cover.jpg

"Toward the end of World War II, Russian soldiers pushing into eastern Germany stumble across a secret Nazi lab"

Really this film was a waste of time, the only element worth talking about was the design of the monsters. Some of them were quite good but the others were ridiculous and served no point at all. I hate the camera style in the film it makes it harder to get into the movie and is simply annoying.

Day 44 - Kill Zombie! (Netherlands)

Kill Zombie! (2012) Poster

"The bizarre story takes place in Amsterdam-West, where a virus turns people into bloodthirsty zombies. Although much blood is flowing and many limbs chopped off, there is a lot to laugh at in this bizarre horror comedy."

Such a ridiculous film that was so annoying it ruins the whole zombie effect. The main character was an idiot who would sacrifice his life for an office slut who bares her leg to him even though he's never had her. His older brother was a bigger idiot who was annoying as hell. Everything behind the film was comedic to be actually funny. There is no real value in this film, its once of the worst zombie movies I have ever seen.

Day 43 continued - Peabody and Sherman (American)

Mr Peabody & Sherman Poster.JPG
"The time-travelling adventures of an advanced canine and his adopted son, as they endeavor to fix a time rift they created. "

Such a wonderful movie even though I hate 3D I couldn't help but fall in love with this movie. The animation was good as far as I could see though I was annoyed with some of the character designs. I also wish the film was a bit longer and had more depth in it. The voice acting was good or should I say the casting choice of the characters voices were wonderful. They seemed to match each character well without any annoying voices. This is a great movie to watch even if you are not a child or animation major. Its the first time in a while that a film has made me actually laugh and feel good while watching it. I suggest this film to anyone that enjoys a good movie.

"A documentary that celebrates Rick Hall, the founder of FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and the signature sound he developed in songs such as "I'll Take You There", "Brown Sugar", and "When a Man Loves a Woman"."

A decent documentary that could have been filmed a lot better as it doesn't capture the whole magic of the place called Muscle Shoals and the people within the documentary. It was great to hear from some musical legends who have worked with Rick Hall and how his studio changed music. Rick Hall was a very interesting man, his take on music was quite spectacular. I only wish there was more and that they had a better director to shoot this documentary.

Day 42 continued - Please Teach Me English (Korean)

Please Teach Me English movie poster.jpg
" a young woman begins English lessons after she is unable to help a foreigner at her government office."

A decent romantic comedy that is a little over the top which brings it down a little bit. I enjoyed the lead actresses performance, everyone else was a bit annoying. I enjoyed the fact that the characters were actually trying to learn English. Its a good movie to watch if you are bored and want to see a multicultural film.

Mary feels Gary's devotion to Walter is detracting from their relationship.
In Los Angeles, the three visit the abandoned Muppet Studios."

Not the best film ever but it was enjoyable. Jason Segel was funny but honestly I didn't really like Amy Adams for some reason. I loved all the cameos they seemed quite natural which helped the realism of the film a bit. The voice work was spot on and sounded great as was the puppet control. Its kind of surprising to know that this was the directors first film, he did a good job.

The Lost Medallion: The Adventures of Billy Stone (2013) Poster

"A man who stops into a foster home to drop off some donations soon tells the kids a story about two teenage friends who uncover a long-lost medallion that transports them back in time."

A very boring film that gave me a headache and was a complete waste of time. The film was poorly directed with rushed character changes and poor acting from everyone. The kids were annoying and tried too hard to act to the point you know that they are bad at it right now. Skip this film even if you might show it to children.

An insight into the world of punk in China and the problems they face. It was a great documentary, its barely over an hour but it was worth it even though you wish it was a bit longer. It was interesting to learn what punk means to a different variety of Chinese musicians. Anyone interested in punk music will like this documentary.

Day 40 continued - Gakudori - Young Drifter (Japanese)

"A young man discovers the exciting world of drifting when he falls in love with a beautiful woman. Masaki (Minehiro Kinomoto) is a first-year student at Akagiyama University who falls instantly in love with Nanako (Yumi Sugimoto), a beautiful driving instructor at a local driving school. When he learns that Nanako was a former member of his school’s auto club and a drifting enthusiast, he immediately joins the club. As he tries to learn the art of drifting, a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers to make a sharp corner turn, has Masaki gotten himself in over his head when he and his friends vie for a spot in the “Gakudori: Young Drifters,” an annual drifting competition for students? “Gakudori” is a 2011 Japanese movie directed by Kei Era. "

A very over the top film about the drifting world, I didn't really like it because of that. You can't take any serious in this film because nothing is actually serious. There were a few laughable moments but not enough to leave me feeling satisfied.

Day 40 - Bleach the movie: Hell Verse (Japanese)

Bleach Hell Verse poster.png
"The movie opens with a recap of Ichigo Kurosaki's final battle against Ulquiorra in Hueco Mundo, in which he transformed into an incredibly powerful and uncontrollable Hollow. Some time later—after Aizen's defeat, but before Ichigo loses his powers—, Rukia Kuchiki and Renji Abarai arrive in the human world to inspect a strange occurrence; though they remain vague about what. Shortly after, powerful masked spirits attack Ichigo and the others at school."

I was so bored with this movie, to me the story was very simple and really had no heart. The art was good but the animation was fine needed more work. Overall I was disappointed with this film so much.

Day 39 continued - Automata (Spanish)

Theatrical release poster

"In 2044, solar flares have irradiated the Earth, killing over 99% of the population and causing technological regression. The survivors build primitive humanoid robots, called Pilgrims, to help rebuild in the harsh environments. These robots have two unalterable protocols: they can not harm any form of life, and they may not modify themselves or other robots. Initially seen as mankind's salvation, they are relegated to manual labor when they fail to stop the advance of desertification."

A very non original sci-fi movie that could have been a thousand times better. I didn't really like anything in the movie besides the design of the robots. The movie is almost two hours long and not a whole lot happens in the film. Antonio Banderas does a good job but its not enough to save this movie sadly..

Day 39 - Shrink (American)

"
The story takes place in Hollywood, and revolves around Dr. Henry Carter (Kevin Spacey). Most of Carter's patients are luminaries in the film industry, each undergoing their own life crisis. Carter lives in a large, luxurious house overlooking the Hollywood Hills, and has published a hugely successful self-help book. However, Carter is disheveled, and he is frequently seen alone in his large house. He smokes marijuana at home, in his car, and behind his office when not seeing patients. Carter routinely drinks himself to sleep around his house, waking up in his clothes. He never enters his bedroom.
Despite his own problems, Carter continues psychotherapy with his patients, maintaining his incisiveness, compassion, and strong doctor-patient relationships."

A good independent film to watch on a slow day, it might make you laugh but it will also make you think. Kevin Spacy is awesome I enjoyed his performance a lot and hope to see him in more independent films like this. The supporting cast wasn't all that bad either especially Robin Williams and Keke Palmer. Those two did the best out of the supporting cast because their acting was so natural. I do like the character development present in the film but towards the end everything seems so rushed. Thus I enjoyed almost everything but the ending which could have been a lot better. Its still a good movie to watch.

Day 38 continued - My First Mister (German/American)

"A 17-year-old girl has a troubled relationship with a 49-year-old man."

A wonderful film that's not breathe the classical stereotypes of life. There's a nice conflict between these two characters that truly makes you enjoy the ride of this film. The struggles of the seventeen year old girl is shown not to be a phase she is really struggling as is the 49 year old man who doesn't really live until he meets her. This film has so much heart that you want to see the story continued. This is a wonderful film that I recommend to all ages that can truly understand the struggles of the people in this world.

Day 38 - Fatal Ecounter (Korean)

The Fatal Encounter (2014) Poster

"King Jeongjo (Hyun-Bin) attempts to protect his royal powers from the conflict of two factions: Noron and Soron."

Visually this movie is great but I felt like they moved the camera too fast in some areas in the movie. Hyun Bin did a great job as a King, he really stood out in the film. I was quite impressed with his range of acting skills. I even enjoyed Ji-min Han's performance it was so different that her other roles. I did like how they didn't rush the film and set a time limit they followed well. The plot could have been a little better, some of the characters could have had more depth. The progression of the film was good and the character development was almost spot on. There is a lot of room of improvement in this film but it has a nice feel to it.

"Art is a young boy looking for fame, but he is uncertain if he has the talents for that. Foon, a young girl is completely the opposite of Art. She knows what she wants and is reaching her goal, but she has feelings towards Art, but will Art know it? "

I wasn't a big fan of this movie when I first started to watch but it grew on me. I enjoyed Foon but wish we could have seen more of her world. I hated the character Art until the last half of the movie when he finally discovers his true passion. I like the idea behind the movie and the statement it makes.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007) Poster
"The true story of Elle editor Jean-Dominique Bauby who suffers a stroke and has to live with an almost totally paralyzed body; only his left eye isn't paralyzed."

The reviews for this movie are very positive but for me this movie was completely boring with little value. The first few minutes of the film are completely annoying with poor camera techniques. There is no real heart in this film and I felt nothing from or for any of the characters present in the film. It shows us a kind of dull feeling that you really don't want to see. I suggest you skip this film and maybe watch The Intouchables.

Day 36 - Destiny (Korean)

Destiny-movie.jpg

When a man and woman who first meet their tempers get the best of them as it does the second time they meet and so on. They start to realize maybe its destiny that keeps bringing them together.

Not bad honestly but it wasn't that good either. It was a nice take on a love story and I enjoyed watching it. I felt like the direction could have been better but I understand that this was the director's first movie. I liked the interactions between the main characters which was give and take. It was funny to see at times but felt natural. I didn't really like the ending I felt like it was rushed and there was really no drama involved which makes a more good hearted romance film.

Day 35 continued - The Coffin (Thailand)

Thecoffinposter.jpg

"A young man, and several years later, a woman, undergo a Thai ritual of lying in a coffin, which is supposed to ensure long life and banish bad luck. The ritual is also seen as a solution to fatal genetic diseases and diseases like cancer. The man, Chris, wakes and is brought to the hospital where doctors say he suffers from hallucinations. It turns out that the hallucinations are paranormal visits by his ex-girlfriend and trying to kill him, who dies, along with her child, just when his wife is cured. The woman on the other hand is rid of her lung cancer, however is haunted by her boyfriend, Jack, whom she was supposed to marry. The woman consults an expert in the paranormal, and later Chris, to try to solve her supernatural difficulties."

A very confusing horror film that features good and bad English speaking actors. I like the concept of the film but the execution was bad. This is probably one of the worst horror movies I have seen. I suggest you skip this one.

Fong and her brother Tan were separated when they arrived on Earth and she wants to find the rest of his skeleton. The government actually has shady plans for the Blue Bloods, and there are alien baddies who show up to cause mayhem. "

Even with talent like Shu Qi and Andy Lau this film is a complete waste. The special effects are absolutely horrible, they look like they belong in a PlayStation 2 game and one of the cheap ones. The supporting cast was horrible, their skills in acting proved to be about zero. The script was really weak, some characters often repeated the same thing a few times. Shu Qi's English needed work, her ascent is a big thick and she often quickly said her lines. The best part of the film to me is the fact that the film is based in San Francisco that's about it. Don't watch this movie even if you are a fan of Andy Lau.

Day 34 continued - Rinco's Restaurant (Japanese)

Rinco's Restaurant-p2.jpg

"After a bad breakup, a young woman returns to her hometown and opens a menuless restaurant."

Such a cute movie that balances comedy, drama, and the absurd in a unique way. The lead actress, Kou Shibasaki,  was quite good she often had me smiling with her sincere acting. I enjoyed the comedy of the characters present in the small town. The film made me laugh a lot, its quite easy to understand even for non-Japanese speakers. "Four kids travel through a wardrobe to the land of Narnia and learn of their destiny to free it with the guidance of a mystical lion."

I couldn't help but to compare this film series to the Lord of the Rings series as they are both long running and full of fantasy plus the original authors were friends. There is a big reason why we remember Peter Jackson and not Andrew Anderson. This film isn't really epic despite its length and what happens in the film. It has a great start but it starts to feel rushed towards the end of the film. The effects were good for the most part, some didn't stand out as much which is good but bad at the same time. At parts some of the characters are annoying with no real purpose. I did enjoy the fact that Liam Neeson voiced Aslan the lion. The actress who played the white witch didn't really stand out and was basically plain. I did like the costume design and the design of the world. It is an enjoyable film that is watchable for all ages.

A very good independent film from a man who has directed a lot of high budget films. It was nice to see all these A list celebrities in this small movie. It was nice to see them actually act without any action going on. There was a lot of emotion present in the film that really helped it flow perfectly. "65 years after a masked serial killer terrorized the small town of Texarkana, the so-called 'moonlight murders' begin again. Is it a copycat or something even more sinister? A lonely high school girl, with dark secrets of her own, may be the key to catching him."

Better than I thought, it was especially good. With the premise you would think it would be a bad movie but the director and actors did a great job. The sex scene was better than most horror films, the woman didn't have large fake breasts which was a good aspect. The lead actress Addison Timlin had a good aura about her, she was good much better than any other I have seen in the horror genre.
