Day 110 - Housebound (New Zealand)

Housebound2014horrormovieposter.jpeg

"Kylie Bucknell is forced to return to the house she grew up in when the court places her on home detention. Her punishment is made all the more unbearable by the fact she has to live there with her mother Miriam - a well-intentioned blabbermouth who's convinced that the house is haunted."-IMDb

This movie impressed me, I didn't think it was going to be as good as it was. When you think of horror and comedy meshing together you think of corniness/bad everything yet Housebound soars high above those clichés. The dialogue was realistic and quite attention grabbing at times. The comedy is there but its not totally in your face. The comedy is natural as its mainly to due with the characters choice that is comical. For one instance a cheese grater was used for something that it was not meant for. There are not any jokes in the film, which helps it out a whole lot. I like the acting and the lighting was well done. I have to tip my hat to the cinematographer and the director they made a lot of good choices with this film.

Day 109 continued - WolfCop (Canadian)

WolfCop2014 poster.jpg

"The plot revolves around an alcoholic small town cop who transforms into a werewolf after being cursed." - Wikipedia

I think the film is quite clever, even though you don't expect it too. I like the comedy present in the film, it wasn't too much at any point. I like the graphics, I'm glad they didn't use CGI. I think that added realism to the film. I was quite entertained but felt like the film could have been longer. This is a good movie to watch on a slow night and you don't want anything too serious.

Day 109 - Anacondas: the Hunt for Blood Orchid

Anacondas The Hunt for the Blood Orchid movie.jpg

"The film follows a team of researchers set for an expedition into the island of Borneo to search for a sacred flower, for which they believe will bring humans a longer and healthier life, but soon become stalked and hunted by the deadly anacondas inhabiting the island"

Proves that sequels are worst than the first movie. This film is filled with poor special effects and film cliches. I didn't like the acting either, a lot of it screamed D-rated movie even though most of the cast have done roles on actual good work. This is not one movie you should watch, go watch a better movie or better yet read a book.

Day 108 continued - X Men: Days of Future Past (American)

X-Men Days of Future Past poster.jpg

"The story, inspired by the 1981 Uncanny X-Men storyline "Days of Future Past" byChris Claremont and John Byrne, focuses on two time periods, with Wolverine traveling back in time to 1973 to save the future of mankind"

Most likely the best X-Men movie of the series. I loved almost everyone's performance except for a few bad eggs. Hugh Jackman was the right choice to make as a lead for this film, he seems like the only logical choice to be honest. I like the small roles that they gave some foreign stars like Omar Sy and Fan BingBing. It is nice to see that the X-Men world is expanding and adding characters from different parts of the world and different skin tones. I also think the script was really good for an action hero movie. So the negative is I don't like Jennifer Lawerence, I think she doesn't really have the right body type to play her character. Her moves felt so fake and it felt like she hurt herself during the filming of some of her action scenes. Everyone else I truly enjoyed watching, I love the ending as well but I won't spoil it and tell everyone. You will have to watch this movie, it is the best one I have seen for a while.

Day 108 - Elizabeth the Golden Age (European)

Elizabeth golden poster.jpg
"A mature Queen Elizabeth endures multiple crises late in her reign including court intrigues, an assassination plot, the Spanish Armada, and romantic disappointments."

I love historical films yet I hate this one not just for its historical inaccuracies but for the fact that it is a badly done film that should of been great. Cate Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush did a great job with the rest of the cast performing sub par. The direction of Shekhar Kapur was poor and it felt like this was his first time directing. I wish the film was more about Elizabeth rather than focusing a bit too much attention on the fact she was a virgin and was seeking romance. I suggest you skip this film and see a better historical film.

Day 107 continued - Purge: Anarchy (American)

The Purge – Anarchy Poster.jpg

"The movie is notable for its dramatic change over the original: while the first film was set entirely in one house, this film is set all over the Los Angeles wide area to give the notion of what usually happens during the Purge" - Wikipedia

Such a freaking disappointment, this film series had a real chance to make something of itself but it truly fails.  The only good factor of this film was that they showed the whole city rather than just what is happening in one house. Also the film displayed a lot of minority characters which I truly loved. I really hated the fact there was a moral compass and most of the characters stated that the purge was bad. I did expect that but I think this film might do something originally but I was let down. There is no reason to watch this film, I was completely bored.

Day 107 - Begin Again (American)

Begin Again film poster 2014.jpg

" Knightley plays a singer-songwriter who is discovered by a struggling record label executive (Ruffalo) and collaborates with him to produce an album recorded in public locations all over New York City."

Not the best film about music that I have seen but it wasnt all that bad. I do think that both Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo did a great job in their roles. The direction could have been better but at times the actors overshadow the flaws in the film. I wish their was a bit more depth and I'm glad that they didn't make this into some poorly done romantic musical film. The music wasn't half bad, it was entertaining and I happen to enjoy a good musical film. This will go on my list as one of the good ones. If you are a fan of music based movies then this is the one for you.

Day 106 continued - The Great White Hype ( American)

Great white hype ver2.jpg

"James "The Grim Reaper" Roper (Damon Wayans), the undefeated heavyweight boxing champ of the world, defeats his latest challenger with ease and visits an after-party thrown by the Rev. Fred Sultan (Samuel L. Jackson), a conniving and manipulative businessman who also acts as Roper's fight promoter. The Sultan relays some bad news to everyone: The fight was a financial flop. He deduces the reason that boxing events have become far less profitable is because audience members are sick of watching only black boxers fight each other. The Sultan predicts that a white contender, even one without a viable chance of winning, would create a huge payday for all involved in the fight (citing the Larry Holmes vs. Gerry Cooney battle in 1982 and the playing of the race card in that instance as a precedent), and he vows to either find or "create" a white contender in no time at all."

With a great cast like this, the delivery of this movie could have been so much better. I was disappointed at it lacked depth even if its a satire film. Not a whole lot happens in this film, its more of a bore than anything entertaining. This is a sports film that you shouldnt watch.

Day 106 - All Cheerleaders Die (American)

All Cheerleaders Die (2013 film poster).jpg

A group of cheerleaders become the undead after an accident that costs them their lives.

A lot better than I thought it was going to be to be honest. I do like the fact that the main actress was a lesbian because it adds a different element to the horror film. I like the supporting characters but didn't really like some of the jocks but they did their job as they were annoying as hell. The story could have been better as there wasnt all that much depth. It felt very short as well, not much really happens and everything that does happens too fast. Its a nice horror movie to watch on a lazy sunday.

Day 105 continued - Honeymoon (2014-American)

Honeymoon film poster.jpg

"stars tars Rose Leslie and Harry Treadaway as a newly married couple whose honeymoon ends up being ruined by a series of strange events." - Wikipedia

Such a poor waste of a film even if its the directors debut. I thought the acting was bad and a bit annoying. The script and plot development needed a lot more work. I thought the romance factor of the film was there but felt like the horror part was very weak and predictable. Skip this movie if you can.

Day 105 - Almost Mercy (American)

Almost Mercy (2015) Poster

"Jackson and Emily aren't like the other kids. Two burgeoning sociopaths on the brink of total meltdown. Ticking time bombs seeking revenge. Who will unravel first?"

I simply love this movie! There are some parts that could have been better but towards the end of the film did it truly shows its real nature. It was the kind of movie I was searching for, I wish there were more movies like this. The killings were awesome and well designed. I like the backstories and all of the characters. I enjoyed Emily more than Jackson but they both had some really good moments. It is slow at first but it picks up!
The script wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be but the dialogue could of used some improvements. I think the crew did a great job with making this film feel so realistic.

Day 104 continued - Playing It Cool (American)

Playing It Cool Movie Poster.jpg

"The narrator is a writer and wants to write action but his publisher Bryan wants him to write about romance first. The problem is, the narrator doesn't believe in love. But when he meets Her, he falls for her, only to find out that she is already engaged to Stuffy."- Wikipedia

Chris Evans does not disappoint in this romantic comedy. It was nice to see a romantic comedy from a mans perspective that wasn't filled with that many cliches. I happen to like the chemistry between the two leads as I think it was believable even though it could have been better. I enjoyed the playfulness of the characters and the overall tone of the story. The script was nice but some of the characters could have been written better as they lacked real depth.

Day 104 - Analyze That (American)

Analyze that.jpg

"Analyze That is a 2002 mafia comedy film, and a sequel to the 1999 film Analyze This. The film  stars Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal who respectively reprise their roles as mobster Paul Vitti and psychiatrist Ben Sobel."- Wiki

Not the best film considering the two stars and the director (Harold Ramis). It still had some interesting moments but fall flats to be anything worthy of the talent. I like what they were trying to do but they rushed and the result is poor. The comedy was vulgar at times which is what you should aspect but it was still funny to see Robert De Niro doing some comedy that isnt Meet the Fockers. If you haven't seen the first one then don't watch this one.

Day 103 continued - Hercules (2014-American)

Hercules (2014 film).jpg

"Hercules (Dwayne Johnson) is the leader of a band of mercenaries comprising the spear-wielding prophet Amphiaraus of Argos, the knife-throwing thief Autolycus of Sparta, the feral warrior Tydeus of Thebes, the Amazon archer Atalanta of Scythia and his nephew storyteller Iolaus  of Athens. Hercules is said to be the demigod son of Zeus, who completed the legendary Twelve Labors, only to be betrayed by Hera, who drove him insane and caused him to murder his wife Megara and their children during a visit to King Eurystheus . Though Hercules's demigod heritage and the truth behind his labors is questioned by everyone, he does display unusual strength and skill in combat. "-Wikipedia

The best Hercules film I have ever seen, I think the Rock is also the best actor to play Hercules. His acting wasn't over the type, his muscles were real, and his presence was commanding. This movie is his best perfomrance to date. Yet his performance does not save this movie from the horrible hands of its director, Brett Ratner. Ratner simply knows how to butcher a movie, a lot of the acting was weak as the story was. I wished a lot of the characters had more depth. I didn't like a lot of the dialogue which seemed so forced at times. There didnt seem to be any chemistry between any of the actors either which brought the value of this movie down. Honestly I suggest you skip this film.

" Liam Neeson stars as Rob Roy MacGregor, an 18th-centuryScottish clan chief who battles with an unscrupulous nobleman in the Scottish Highlands" -Wikipedia

I had a lot of problems with this movie, first off Jessica Lange looks so old even in this movie compared to Liam Neeson. I also felt like the film was boring at several parts and a bit predictable. I did like Liam Neeson and Tim Roth's performances. I think this duo get a great job keeping me entertained. I do like the time period and I still think this is a decent film. If you are interested in Scottish history then you will like this film.

Cockneys vs zombies poster.jpg

" The plot centres on a group of Cockneys who arm themselves to rescue their grandfather and his friends from their retirement home as a zombie apocalypse takes place in the East End of London."

One of my favorite zombie movies, I think it has some good moments that outweigh the bad moments. The comedy wasn't over the top, nor did it have any chessy special effects. I think it was kind  of cool how the old folks were kind of badass towards the end of the movie. The acting was there which is surprising for both a zombie movie and a horror movie. I did feel like there could have been more depth but the film was still quite entertaining to watch. If you like zombie comedies then this is the movie for you.

Day 102 - The Aviator (American)

The Aviator Poster.jpg

"Based on the 1993 non-fiction book Howard Hughes: The Secret Life by Charles Higham, the film depicts the life of Howard Hughes, an aviation pioneer and director of Hell's Angels. The highly stylized film portrays his life between the late 1920s and late 1940s, during which time Hughes became a successful film producer and an aviation magnate while simultaneously growing more unstable due to severe obsessive-compulsive disorder."-Wikipedia

My favorite Martin Scorsese film and my favorite Leonardo Di Caprio performance (besides the one in Django Unchained). The film was very interesting, it was a look into the life of a man who changed the way we live to a certain degree. Howard Hughes is the man who designed the underwire bra, once held the title of spending the most money on a movie, a better hospital bed, new heights with air travel, and many other things. Martin earns a big thumbs up for his direction and for choosing such a gifted actor for this film. I was deeply impressed with the sets, supporting acting from the likes of John C. Reilly, Kate Beckinsale and many others. I happen to love this time period, I think this film really shows that they did their research. Overall this is a great movie to watch if you are interested in Howard Hughes or early Hollywood.

He begins teaching a screenwriting course at Binghamton University in upstate New York and falls in love with a single mother (Tomei)."-Wikipedia

Actually not bad but not great. I think this is my favorite Hugh Grant movie. I thought the film was enjoyable but the supporting cast was underwritten. I felt like this movie would have better if it focused on the students rather than as a romantic comedy. Besides that this is a good movie to watch on a nice relaxing day. Its also a good film for a film majors.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) Poster

"Bilbo and Company are forced to engage in a war against an array of combatants and keep the Lonely Mountain from falling into the hands of a rising darkness." -IMDb

Such a weak movie I swear it was such a disappointment to the point that I wanted to throw the DVD away. It felt so short despite being 144 minutes long, not a whole lot seems to happen. I think this was the weakest Hobbit movie but that isn't saying much as the other two were barely passable. Peter Jackson has failed to truly honor the fans with his final hobbit film. The film didnt have any heart, and it felt overacted in some parts. Things seemed rushed if you could believe that. I simply hated this film to its core which really surprised me.

"Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart, embarks on an adventure that spans three fantastic worlds where he must face his greatest fears." - IMDb

One of the better animation films that I have seen this year. I really enjoyed seeing a part of the Latin culture, I think they did a really good job at telling this story with the culture in mind. The voice acting was great, I appreciate the fact that the majority of the voice actors actually have some kind of Latin heritage. It makes the film seem more authentic that way.
With that said, the story could have been better in many ways. It seemed too simple and it a little too childish in a way. The character development was good as was the character designs. The director, Jorge Guiterrez, did a really good job. You can tell that he is experienced in directing animation which was greatly appreciated.

I would suggest this film to anyone interested in Mexican culture and wants to see a good animation movie.

Day 100 - King of Comedy (Hong Kong)

Chows KING OF COMEDY.jpg

"Wan Tin-Sau (Chow) is an actor who cannot seem to catch a break, since his only professional jobs are limited to being a movie extra and is often tormented on stage. As well as being an actor, he is also the head of his village's community centre."

Another Stephen Chow film that borderlines on corny and comedy. I think this is one of his better ones to be honest. It was interesting to say the least. It could have been better as there were a few dull moments. I happen to enjoy this love interest, as I felt like she was a better actress than some of other love interests. The script was a tad bit weak this time but its kind of normal for a Stephen Chow comedy.

"The enduring friendship between the Walling and Ostroff families is tested when Nina, the prodigal Ostroff daughter, returns home for the holidays after a five-year absence and enters into an affair with David, head of the Walling family." - IMdb

Despite the talent of Hugh Laurie and Oliver Platt this film fails to be entertaining. The script wasn't that bad but it needed to be more realistic. The acting was kind of there but felt like the younger cast kind of held the film back. The ending was so predictable, it left a kind of bad taste in my mouth. It made the film seem a lot more simpler than it was. In better hands this would have been a good movie.

"Centuries ago, under the sands of ancient Egypt, a prince was buried and his tomb eternally curses so that no man would ever again suffer from his evil ways. But hundreds of years later on a greedy search for treasure, a group of archaeologists break the curses seal of the tomb. Every man vanishes without a trace, leaving behind only a log book - and a deadly warning of the legend of the bloodthursty TALOS. Fifty years later the log book ends up in the hands of the granddaughter of the head archaeologist, and she defiantly sets out to retrace his steps. "

One of the worst movies I have ever seen. The acting was a complete waste as was the direction and the script. Avoid this movie like you would a serial killer or the plague. There is nothing much to say about it. I felt like this was someone's student film from some low down college in the middle of nowhere even though there are quite a few famous actors present in the film.

I have a guilty pleasure which is I love movies from the 80's and 90s. This movie is one of them as it was released in 1996. It's not that great of a movie or even a good one at that. If you know Pauly Shore's style of comedy then you may just like this film. It has a few laugh moments but besides that it doesn't do much. I didn't like the pace of the film but it really had potential to be more with someone else directing it.
